1. Call to Order: Carole LeCren called the meeting to order at 2:37 p.m.
2. Minutes: The minutes from October 15, 2003 were approved as amended.
3. Agenda Items - OLD Business:
* Hiring of New Counselor: Dana Shelburne reported that in the interim,
Pat Shaler would be doing college applications for seniors. Once that
is completed, the open position would be floated.
* The Use of Bad Language By Teachers: D. Shelburne will send a message/email
regarding the use of bad language by teachers in the class.
* WASC Accreditation (Non-Participation by Coaching Staff): There was
a concern voiced that coaches do not attend WASC accreditation meetings
for practice. D. Shelburne will talk with Bob Allen (Athletic Director)
regarding this issue.
* Pressure on Athletes to Play in Club Sports of Coaches: D. Shelburne
reported that Basketball did have a parent meeting to clear up the issue.
He also reported that coaches have been told that club pressure is NOT
acceptable, and if there is tangible evidence to show this is happening
it should be brought to him.
* Student Planners for 04-05 (Need LJHS-Specific Inserts?): Patti Nussbaum
reported that the planners are paid for by PTA ($3,300) and by ASB ($2,000).
She wants to know if we can take out some of the LJHS-specific pages to
save on the printing costs. The group agreed that this would be fine.
4. Agenda Items - NEW Business:
* Absence of Qualified AP Music Theory Substitute: Patti Nussbaum asked
about the issue of the absence of the band instructor. Mr. Rodriguez has
been out for four weeks, and the current sub has no band experience. The
AP Music Theory class is especially suffering with this absence. Alexis
Steele and Samantha Larkin reported that there are several problems with
discipline in the course. Melissa Cunningham asked if a V.P. could sit
in on fifth period for a few days to help gain control. A long discussion
ensued with resulting action items of:
-look for online help for the AP Music Theory course
-have administration sit in on the classes to set the tone
-search community for volunteers to help.
5. Roundtable:
* Jamie Ginsberg is on the Parent Congress Committee and is open to bring
any issues you have.
* Rachel Tenenbaum reported that the science department found a parent
that is willing to clean the departments microscopes.
* Concern over Michael Moore coming to speak at LJHS. Some teachers are
offering extra credit and D. Shelburne says teachers must give an alternative
to this.
* There is racial graffiti on the desks in an AP Statistics class.
* Kudos for Pete Shaw for working really efficiently and hard around campus
and with PTA.
* Kathleen Steele wanted to know if we need a Spring Open House.
* Money is being raised to begin work on the lower athletic field.
* D. Shelburne reported that we are working on a waiver for the AYP because
one student missed one day of testing.
