NEWS: Registration Web Site and Survey Please visit the new web site created specifically for news about the fall registration days. In an effort to improve on an already very well organized event, Cal Mann, new registration chair, is asking everyone who participated this year to complete and submit the survey that he created on this new web site: www.LJHSRegistration.org Students and Parents, The school library is desperately in need of our continued funding. Please consider giving a gift to LJHS Library Tribute Fund this holiday season. You could honor a teacher, a coach or even a fellow student."Even a dollar makes a difference". Thank you, Gillian Moss To make a donation, print this form and send with your payment to: Library Tribute Fund, La Jolla High School, 750 Nautilus Street, La Jolla, CA 92037 To learn more about "Turf It", please visit our web pages on the Muirlands web site at www.muirlandsms.org/turfit To be blunt, the athletic field at Muirlands is in terrible shape and presents serious safety issues for our children. During this school year alone, more than a dozen students have suffered injuries while participating in P.E. classes held on the field and the surrounding track. And, since the field is used during the entire school year by all P.E. classes at Muirlands, and by middle school and high school athletic teams, all efforts to re-seed or re-sod the field in times past have been rendered useless within a month. The only possible solution to this situation is to install an artificial surface. In pursuit of that goal, a committee has been formed representing Bird Rock, La Jolla, and Torrey Pines Elementary Schools, as well as Muirlands Middle School and La Jolla High, and all five site principals fully embrace and support this effort. Operating under the name “Turf It,” this committee has organized with the goal of raising the funds needed to install the district standard synthetic material (FieldTurf), renovate the running course, and create a new outdoor fitness center as soon as possible. Every student attending an elementary school in La Jolla will attend MMS, participate in P.E. classes, and therefore benefit from this project—as will all those who participate in extracurricular athletics. Plans include space for a regulation athletic field which will serve the needs of the field hockey, soccer, and lacrosse programs, and the baseball program will finally have an appropriate outfield. ONLY $400,000.00 left to go!!! This is the time to get involved and make it happen - Turf It is ready to replace the Muirlands field THIS SUMMER with just a little more help from you. We have a commitment of $250,000.00 provided we act NOW. We have been able to negotiate the cost of the installation and with donated services have lowered the amount needed to start, so we are very close. The naming rights for the field are still available for $250,000.00 and we can still use donations for field preparation and supplies (such as perforated pipes and earth moving machines). Remember, this project benefits not only all La Jolla public school students, but the whole community as well, so get involved now to make our world a little greener! The momentum is moving us
forward- BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP!!! We are applying for grants and still
trying to identify those large donors (individual or corporate) that we
could approach to help raise the additional $980,000.00 needed. IF YOU
KNOW ANYONE who might be able to help us reach our goal please have
them contact Howard Frank at 619-574-1888 or hbfandjm@aol.com as soon as
possible. Injuries continue to happen regularly on this field and it is
a situation that we cannot let continue.
Since many of you
might be looking for tax breaks- the following information may
be helpful:
The Foundation at Muirlands Middle school can now receive
gifts of appreciated common stock! You can donate your stock directly
to the Muirlands Foundation and receive an immediate tax deduction.
There is no cost to the donor and –since the Muirlands Foundation is
tax exempt- selling the securities will not be a taxable event for the
Foundation.
The Turf It! committee has a team of Certified Financial
Planners that have volunteered to meet with any potential donors and
their advisors to answer questions or assist in the structure of a
donation to the project.
All checks should be made payable to the Muirlands Foundation and should be mailed with the completed "Turf It Donation Form" to: Muirlands Foundation "Turf It"
