Mr. Dana Shelburne
Recently
released SAT 9 data once again indicate La Jolla High as the only high school
in the
Speaking
of examinations, we will be proctoring the California High School Exit Exam
(CAHSEE) in early March. All tenth grade
students will be tested, as will any eleventh grader who has yet to pass a
portion of the exam. We have had an excellent
pass rate in the past and expect our students to do well again. Remember, students must pass this test in
order to graduate from high school.
In
order to further assist those students who have been experiencing academic
difficulty in English and mathematics, we have established an after-school
tutoring center in Rooms 801 and 802.
Student tutors from our Link Crew group will be joined by various adult
tutors every Monday and Wednesday from
Finally,
I am pleased to announce a new addition to our counseling staff. Susan Webb will be taking over for the
retired Pat Shaler and serving students in the P-Z range of the alphabet. Susan has been an outstanding teacher and
brings with her a wealth of hands-on knowledge about education. We are very pleased to have her here at LJHS.
Mrs. Susan Oliver
It is hard to believe that the
school year is going by so quickly. We
had a very full calendar in September and October and hopefully you all took
advantage of at least some of the wonderful events. We are grateful to Candace Person and her
helpers for successfully training another group of students in CPR. And we owe our thanks to Joby Bakken and all
the other volunteers who helped stage another wonderful Taste of La Jolla. Sharing time and companionship with fellow
parents and supporters of our school is so important. There is much we can learn from one another.
One of the most important functions
of PTA is to keep communication lines open between the parents and
teachers. We have provided a Parent
Directory in this issue, thanks again to Vienna Kaiser, which will help you
locate staff names and subjects, PTA Board names and numbers, and important
dates. Please feel free to call any of
our members if there is something for which you need information or help.
If you are hearing about poor
grades, conflicts within the classroom, or ongoing problems of any sort, you
should call the teacher. Simply call
454-3081, ask for the voice mail extension of the teacher, and leave a message
requesting a call back. You can then
arrange for a meeting/conference or discuss the matter by phone. Your student may ask you (or tell you) not
to intervene, but communication with the school is important. As much as we want our kids to stand on their
own two feet and learn to “handle their own problems,” some students are simply
not comfortable or capable of resolving some types of conflicts. Should you feel your concerns have not been
satisfactorily addressed after speaking with the teacher, or if the problem is
of a more general nature, please contact either your student’s counselor, a
Vice Principal (Donna Campbell for Grades 9 and 11 or Walter Fairley for Grades
10 and 12), or Principal Dana Shelburne.
The staff appreciates your concerns and input and always wishes to have
problems addressed and resolved as quickly as possible.
Communication is key to the success
and the smooth running of any school.
During our monthly PTA meetings we discuss many of the most pressing
issues and welcome everyone to join in.
The very popular Principal’s Chats are another time when you can
converse with Dana Shelburne. A big
thank you to Zoe Ghahremani for hosting this year’s first Chat. The next one will be at 6:30 p.m. on November
20 at Memorial Academy in their Library.
On December 11 we will meet at the home of Shona Bielinski in La
Jolla. Our next PTA meetings will be at
9:00 a.m. (8:45 coffee/social) in the Library Media Center on December 6 and
January 10. The Governance Committee
also is open to anyone wishing to attend its meetings. Check their article for the dates. And of course, you can stay abreast of what
is happening through the newsletter and web site. Open communication on all levels is possible
if you wish to take the time to pursue it.
These three months are filled with
holidays and minimum days, so please check the calendar. And do check the web site and the “Up to the
Minute” link for additional information and/or changes each month.
May you all enjoy the breaks from
school and celebrate the holidays by having quality time with family and
friends. Stay healthy, happy, and
safe. And pray the new year will bring
an end to the hostilities and fear that have enveloped us and new peace and
harmony to the world.
“Resolve to be tender with the
young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving, and tolerant
with the weak and wrong. Sometime in
life you will have been all of these.”

Susan Oliver
