(information for parents and students)
Counselors are not in the office from 11:00-12:30 due to
lunch supervision. They can be contacted
during regular school hours.
Each college to which you send
an application will need an official report of your SAT I, SAT II, or ACT
scores (including each UC campus). To
have your scores sent to your colleges, use the official request form available
in the Guidance and Counseling Office.
The December 7 SAT (I &
II) is the last date that the UC system will consider for scores. The late registration deadline is November
13, but you may go “stand by” and show up on the morning of the test. There is a “stand- by” fee of $30 in addition
to the regular fee. The SAT I / SAT II
registration booklet is available in the G&C office. Fill out the registration form and take it
with you that morning. If you have any
questions, please see the G&C secretary.
Copies
of the Common Application are available in the G&C Center from the
secretary, Mrs. Jacobacci. Please
“xerox” and do your preliminary work on practice copies so as not to waste
applications. The same suggestion goes
for the UC and CSU applications we make available to you.
Note: The Common Application can be downloaded from the
internet at www.commonapp.org.
This
is a reminder that the Guidance and Counseling Center, in addition to working
with students to plan their course curriculum, is the center for invaluable
information regarding colleges in our state and around the country.
You
should also know about the following helpful booklets. These will assist in the sometimes
intimidating adventure of selecting the high school courses that will satisfy
the requirements of colleges to which your student will eventually apply. The distribution schedule is as follows:
9th,
10th & 11th Grades: LJHS Handbook (red, 8 1/2 x 11” booklet) —
This handbook is very comprehensive, lists high school graduation requirements,
as well as all courses available at LJHS to assist in planning your student’s
class schedule for the coming year. Distributed
in spring.
10th
Grade: High School Graduation 10th Grade Review Packet (white with
colored photos on cover, 8 1/2 x 11” booklet) — This booklet provided by the
District is also very comprehensive. Its
purpose is to review the four-year educational plan developed for the student
in the eighth grade, and possibly amend that plan to achieve his/her goals in
the final two years of high school. Distributed
in spring.
A
request for a recommendation letter from a teacher should be made by the
student directly to the teacher. For
each recommendation letter, a stamped envelope addressed by the student to the
college is required. Students should be
sure to send each teacher a thank you note.
It is
very important that all students have access to the school’s twice-weekly
bulletin. The bulletin is an excellent
source of information for college visits, scholarships, and other campus
activities. In addition to being read in
second period classes, it is posted in the office window and on the Guidance
and Counseling Center bulletin board.
You may read it from home by visiting http://ljhs.sandi.net and linking
to “Parent Information,” then “Bulletin.”
Every
college requires a final transcript.
Before graduation in June, request a transcript (25¢) from the
registrar, Mrs. Solberg, to be sent to the school you will attend. Please give her an envelope, stamped with
first class postage (currently 37¢), addressed to the Admissions Office at your
college.
Applications are available in the
Guidance and Counseling (G&C) Center.
