Good news from a variety of data-reporting venues: La Jolla High posted the highest combined SAT scores in the City Schools, achieved an 83% pass rate in the Advanced Placement programs, set a school record high of twenty-seven National Merit Semi-Finalists, and earned recognition as an AVID School of Distinction — the only high school in the county to be so honored! In addition, the United Front for the Education of African American Children recently honored La Jolla High School as having the "Best Academic Practice for African American Students" of any high school in the San Diego City Schools. Congratulations to students, parents, and staff, whose combined efforts continue to bring laurels to our extended educational community.
My deepest appreciation also to the
student leaders of Link Crew, as well as to their advisors, Ms. Struhar and
Mrs. Eveleth. Only in its second year, the Link Crew program has proven to be a
valuable addition to our campus community, as junior and senior students
voluntarily work to smooth the transition into LJHS for freshmen and other
students new to the school. Moreover, Link Leaders plan to work throughout the
year on topics such as peer pressure, tutoring, and the like. Should you have
a student in need of assistance, please contact any Link Crew member.
By the time this goes to press, the Coggan Family Aquatics Complex should be fully operational, hosting physical education classes as well as the water polo team and community activities. Likewise, the Nierenberg Science and Technology Center will be hosting classes in a beautiful, new, state-of-the-art building. If you have yet to visit these marvelous facilities, please set aside some time to do so. They are treasures that will serve the needs of the school and the community for years to come. Thank you again to all those who helped bring these dreams to fruition.
As we move through the fall season
with its attendant holidays, please remember to schedule vacations in a manner
that does not negatively impact school attendance. We continually stress the
need for students to be in school daily; missed activities can never be
recaptured and active participation is an expectation in every class. We
appreciate your support as we strive to develop a strong sense of
responsibility in this area.

La Jolla High School registered 1,638 students this year, and all would say that it went smoothly and efficiently. How was that possible? With the help of 180 volunteers, who were lead by Sandy Dinnsen, Terry Cooper, and Bee Mittermiller, to whom we all owe a great deal of thanks. The teachers and staff enjoyed a perfect picnic on the quad, thanks to Pat Pickett and her Hospitality Committee. And you all received your newsletter, as you will all year, thanks to the hard-working newsletter committee headed by Marty Jacobson, Trish Billings, and Karen Giffin. Gloria Bakst does a great job of making sure the newsletter gets to you and always welcomes help on mailing day. Those endeavors, as well as countless others, are what the PTA accomplishes for our school.
We had a great turnout for our first PTA Meeting, and everyone was given a quick overview of what is happening and how they can help. If you think that it’s all taken care of and you’re not needed, you will be happy to know that there are still many more things that cannot happen without volunteers like you. Sign up with the volunteer coordinator, Betsy Klene, by sending in the volunteer form that you will find in this newsletter. You have to be involved to know how to get things done, so don’t be left out. Join the PTA, come to meetings and events and be heard, be seen, and make a difference. More than 60% of the teachers had joined the PTA by the time school started, which shows their appreciation of the PTA and its continued involvement between the school and parents. It is our hope that we will soon see all of your names on the membership list to show your support.
Events around
LJHS filled September’s calendar. 9/11 was commemorated with a
special moment of silence at 9:11 a.m., along
with classroom discussions and special speakers. Splash Bash
officially opened the Coggan Family Aquatics Complex and was a street party that
will be remembered for many years to come. The Grade Level Dinners
were orchestrated by Candace Person, who
deserves many thanks for all that she does for our school. Open House gave
the parents a chance to try their students’ schedules and meet their great
teachers. Blast Off was a wonderful day-long event directed by LeeAnne
Wiegand, Yvonne Oberle, Kelly Fernandez, and more than a hundred eager and
willing volunteers who shared their school spirit and helped make it such a
success. Many thanks to everyone for your help and support.
October has
its fair share of events and lots more opportunities to get
acquainted and involved. Our October PTA Meeting will be October
4 at 9:00 a.m. in the Library. The first Principal’s
Chat is at 10:00
a.m. on October 9 at
the home of Zoe Ghahremani (see adjacent article). We always welcome the
chance to listen to, and then discuss, the issues with Dana Shelburne. And one
of the favorite events of the year, Taste of La Jolla, will be
held on October 21. Be sure not to miss out on this fun-filled evening.
“There are many fine things that you mean to do someday, under what you think will be more favorable circumstances. But the only time that is surely yours is the present, so this is the time to speak the word of appreciation and sympathy, to do the generous deed, to forgive the fault of a thoughtless friend, to sacrifice a little more for others. Today is the day to express your noblest qualities of mind and heart and to do at least one worthy thing that you have postponed. Today you can make your life significant and worthwhile. The present is yours to do with as you will.” Grenville Kleiser
Sincerely, Susan Oliver ljhsptapres@yahoo.com

Volunteers and CPR Teachers We need you!
Coach Moyer and the PE staff will once again be training sophomores in CPR.
Cardiovascular disease and stroke are the leading causes of death in the United States. The concept of this program is called "Chain of Survival.” While the overall intent is to teach CPR, the student will be taught to recognize the signs of an emergency and when to call 911. An introduction to Automated External Defibrillator (AED) will be included. Even these simple steps in the chain can make a lifesaving difference.
Starting in late October, the ten-day training will be provided during tenth grade PE classes that meet Periods 1 through 5. Students passing the course will receive a certification card in Adult/Infant CPR from the American Red Cross.
Parent volunteer help from all grade levels (with or without CPR experience) is urgently needed from 7:30 a.m. to 1:10 p.m. on any/all days from October 21 to November 1.
For more information, please contact Candace Person at candaceperson@webtv.net or call 456-2635.
This program is funded by the La Jolla High School PTA. We are grateful for their support of this program.

If the beginning of the year is any indication, we are
assured by the new families at LJHS of having a great year! Their enthusiastic
participation at the "new families" reception during
enrollment/registration made us feel great. We enjoyed meeting more than 35
new members and hope they had a happy start. Additionally, most have expressed
interest in joining the PTA and/or volunteering on
behalf of the school. We look forward to more meetings with each and every
one.
If you are a new member of our school community and did not attend the reception, please contact us at your convenience so that we may notify you about our upcoming events. It is wonderful to have you with us, and we thank you for your show of support for your new school!
