Remember in the elementary school PTA newsletter an article about the importance of breakfast? Sure, I remember… it talked about how “breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” I read that article, tried to force some oatmeal down my daughter for a week, then gave up the fight. “I’m not hungry in the morning,” she’d whine.
Well, here we are, in high school, and you’re being subjected to yet another breakfast article. However, this time, there is much more research to back it up. Studies have conclusive evidence that students who regularly eat breakfast score higher on tests, have less tardiness, and have better overall attendance. They also are less likely to be in the nurse’s office complaining of headaches, stomachaches, and dizziness. One study was bold enough to say that “children who eat breakfast have been shown to get higher grades, think faster, concentrate better, show less fatigue, and are less likely to be described as depressed, anxious, fidgety, or irritable.” One researcher suggests that “breakfast needs to be as much a priority for school children as doing their homework.” Here’s another bonus: children who regularly eat breakfast are less likely to be overweight.
Okay, so enough about the advantages of eating breakfast… let’s get to the part where the kid actually eats it! Sure, there isn’t time for bacon and eggs, so how about: * a slice of cold pizza left over from last night; * a hard-boiled egg that was made earlier in the week; * a slice of cheese on a bagel; * peanut butter on a bagel and some milk; * string cheese and an apple; or * a protein bar.
The food most likely to be eaten by high school students is portable, so they can eat it on the run while doing their morning routine, or in the car, or at the bus stop. And if your children are like mine, they aren’t hungry as soon as they arise. They can take breakfast with them and eat it between second and third period instead of “starving” and coming to my office complaining that they’re sick.
Remember, the body, especially the brain, needs fuel. By first period, most students have been without food for at least twelve hours. Just imagine what that stomach acid is doing in there without food! Try to imagine how that brain is functioning without fuel... think about those students who have a test in the morning or have PE first period.
So, enough talk, you get the picture… let’s eat breakfast!

The LJHS Alumni Association is looking for help from Viking alumni or parents of LJHS students. Since our beginning twelve years ago, we have attempted to handle the operations of the Association with the help of alumni volunteers and a paid part-time administrator. Unfortunately, we currently have ongoing tasks and other projects that we would like to undertake but can't due to the lack of volunteer help. Also, most of the members of the Association's Executive Board have been serving on the board in one capacity or another since 1991. New Viking blood is needed to keep the Association strong and healthy! Please call the alumni office at 551-9871 to offer your help. Every hour you give will be rewarding and appreciated.
In addition, Cathy Cruz, our part-time administrator since the fall of 2000, left the Association at the end of September. We are sorry to see her go, but thank her for being so dedicated to the needs of the Association. Our new administrator is J. Scott Strayer, who graduated from LJHS in 1970. The alumni office, located in back of the reference room of the school library/media center, is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
If you are a LJHS graduate and a parent of a current Viking student, please help us keep our records up to date by filling out the form below. Stop by the alumni office to drop the form off and plan to spend some time browsing through all the Viking memorabilia. If you are unable to visit us, then please have your student deliver the form to the school’s main office or mail it to the Alumni Association at the school’s address.

PSAT Oct. 19 Sat. 8:00 - 11:30 LJHS
Recommended for sophomores and juniors.
To qualify as National Merit Scholars, students must take the PSAT in the junior year. Pay the $17 test fee (payable to LJHS) at LJHS Financial Office by October 11. Room assignments will be posted on Thurs., Oct. 17 in the G&C Ctr.
This is a very important part of the college application process. Beginning in October, scholarship applications are available upon arrival in the G&C Center and will be announced in the student bulletin. It is important that seniors read the weekly bulletins, copies of which are posted in the Guidance and Counseling Center and in the Main Office window.
A Financial Aid Workshop focusing on the Federal Financial Aid (College Profile and FAFSA) applications will be conducted Wednesday, January 15, at 6:30 p.m. in the Library Media Center. Filing windows are January 1 to March 2 for the FAFSA and September 15 to November 15 for the College Profile. These applications are imperative for any and all financial aid considerations.
Every college-bound senior desiring financial aid should submit a FAFSA and/or College Profile application.
College application deadlines are quickly approaching for seniors. Seniors should check college catalogs for deadlines and instructions for applying to the schools that they are interested in attending. University of California (UC) applications must be submitted between November 1 and November 30. California State University (CSU) applications must be submitted between October 1 and November 30. Applications for these schools are available from the secretary in the G&C Center.
A UC Application Workshop for students who need assistance will be given Wednesday, October 23, at 2:30 p.m. in the Guidance and Counseling Center. In November, during the student lunch break on Tuesdays and Thursdays, a counselor will be on duty in the Center to help with application completion.
Seniors applying to private colleges must submit their applications to the LJHS Registrar, Mrs. Solberg, no later than November 15.
Counselors will be visiting freshmen English classes to discuss high school graduation, and senior English classes to discuss college requirements. Dates TBA.
College catalogs and videos are available for checkout from the Guidance and Counseling Center. A "More College Information" file cabinet located in the Center has folders with college applications and other information that is sent to our school from the individual colleges. Seniors are encouraged to browse through these files and take what they need.
Representatives come to campus weekly during fall months
Visits to LJHS by representatives of various colleges are scheduled for October, November, and early
December. Seniors and juniors are encouraged to attend these visits. Sign-up sheets are in the G&C Center, and notification of visits is handled through the school bulletin. We encourage students to browse through the College Visit Folders at least weekly. There is a 5-visit maximum per student and space is limited, so careful selection is advised. Please have your students inform the counseling secretary if they cannot attend a college visit that they signed up for, so other students can take their place.

News & Notices, continued
Hopefully by now everyone knows that we have a leadership group on campus for ninth graders and other new students. The leaders are juniors and seniors who went through extensive training two days before the freshmen orientation. New students were called and paired up with a Link Leader the week before school, and contact is a continuing process throughout the year.
The
freshman orientation was awesome! Teachers and staff lined up outside of the
gym and welcomed our new students. Looks of apprehension and disbelief were
seen as the freshmen were escorted into the gym to a rousing group of leaders
who cheered the class of 2006! Link Crew Coordinator Mrs. Eveleth led the
orientation. She gave it her “all” as she brought the new students together
singing, giving high fives, cheering, and yes, actually introducing themselves
to the person next to them. Not one student left the orientation without
making at least ten new
acquaintances!
Did you know we have a leadership class that is designed to specifically address Link Crew activities? Students must be a Link Crew Leader and be willing to give of their time outside the classroom. Our Link Leaders are unbelievable this year. If you have a student who is a leader, or know of one, please thank him or her for the timeless hours spent in organizing our program. The relationships that are being built between leaders and freshmen are a heartwarming experience for all of us on campus.
Staff members have been very responsive to our program. Leaders have been notified by staff to assist a student who may be having problems with homework, socializing skills, need a friend, or assistance with just about any kind of need. Of course, our leaders are trained to be discrete and to recognize a problem that is beyond their realm.
We want to thank the staff, PTA, LJHS Foundation, and parents for your support! Without you we will not be successful. Let’s work together and make La Jolla High a place about which our students will be proud, a place to have fun, and a place to feel that they belong. Let’s help our students become “Vikings forever!”
If you have a concern or just want to share information, please call Susie Struhar at 454-3081 x254 or Vicki Eveleth at 454-3081.
