A MESSAGE FROM Your Principal, Mr. Dana Shelburne
As I write, we are trying to determine the impact of the state budget crisis on La Jolla High School. Presently the entire district is contemplating a budget reduction of approximately $75 million for the 2002-2003 school year, with deeper reductions to follow for 2003-2004. By the time you read this, cuts in custodial and gardening services will already be implemented throughout the district and at LJHS, with other presently-unknown alterations sure to follow. Our goal is to minimize the impact on teaching and learning, and we are working closely with the district to achieve that end.The California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) is scheduled for March 4-6. All sophomores, as well as any junior who has yet to pass a portion of the exam, must take this state-mandated test at this time. Please, urge your students to do their very best work; they must pass this test in order to graduate from high school. February and March are the months of articulation: the time when students work with their counselors to select courses for the coming year. Due to budget uncertainties, the numbers and types of courses offered by LJHS may need to be reduced. Should that be the case, we will solicit input from the Governance team, the faculty, and the staff. Parental concerns should be expressed to the PTA representatives on the Governance team. Finally, I am pleased to share with you that the Foundation of La Jolla High School has underwritten the cost of installing a wireless surveillance system. Cameras will be positioned throughout the campus to monitor activities and increase security. The system will be operational seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day. Our sincere thanks to the Foundation for this much-needed addition.
