Guidance and Counseling Center (info for parents and students)
SAT I, SAT II, or ACT Scores Needed by All Colleges
Each college to which you send an application will need an official report of your SAT I, SAT II, or ACT scores (including each UC campus). To have your scores sent to your colleges, use the official request form available in the Guidance and Counseling Center. The December 6 SAT (I & II) is the last date that the UC system will consider for scores. The late registration deadline is November 12, but you may go "stand by" and show up on the morning of the test. There is a "stand- by" fee of $30 in addition to the regular fee. The SAT I / SAT II registration booklet is available in the G&C office. Fill out the registration form and take it with you that morning. If you have any questions, please see the G&C secretary.
Booklets Help with College Planning
This is a reminder that the Guidance and Counseling Center, in addition to working with students to plan their course curriculum, is the center for invaluable information regarding colleges in our state and around the country. You should also know about the following helpful booklets. These will assist in the sometimes intimidating adventure of selecting the high school courses that will satisfy the requirements of colleges to which your student will eventually apply. The distribution schedule is as follows: 9th, 10th & 11th Grades: LJHS Handbook (red, 8 1/2 x 11" booklet) -- This handbook is very comprehensive, lists high school graduation requirements, as well as all courses available at LJHS to assist in planning your student's class schedule for the coming year. Distributed in spring. 10th Grade: Information on the High School Graduation 10th Grade Review Packet is available on page 7, in the Sophomore news. The packet will be distributed at the tenth grade review parent night on Wednesday, December 3, at 6:30 p.m. in Parker Auditorium. You will receive your invitation in the mail.
Teacher Recommendations
A request for a recommendation letter from a teacher should be made by the student directly to the teacher. For each recommendation letter, a stamped envelope addressed by the student to the college is required. Students should be sure to send each teacher a thank you note.
Office Hours
Counselors are not in the office from 11:00-12:30 due to lunch supervision. They can be contacted during regular school hours.
Common Application in G & C Office
Copies of the Common Application are available in the G&C Center from the secretary, Mrs. Tarrin. Please "xerox" and do your preliminary work on practice copies so as not to waste applications. The same suggestion goes for the UC and CSU applications we make available to you. Note: The Common Application can be downloaded from the internet at www.commonapp.org.
